HOW AUTOCLAVES WORK
An autoclave consists of a metal chamber into which contaminated items are loaded. Once the door is closed and sealed, the autoclave removes the existing air inside the chamber either through use of a vacuum pump or by forcing it downward through a drain. This prevents the air from insulating the chamber and interfering with the heat transfer process. Next, the machine uses steam at temperatures of up to 275 degrees Fahrenheit to sterilize the equipment and ensure it is ready for its next application. The process typically takes between 15 and 60 minutes, depending on the selected cycle. Autoclaves are used in life sciences laboratories but also serve important roles in other markets including in hospitals and food production.






WHAT WE HAVE TO OFFER
There are different types of laboratory autoclaves we can supply for our clients:
- Horizontal Autoclaves: Front-loading horizontal autoclave units use vacuums to remove the air from inside. This makes them the best choice for wrapped instrument packs or items made of porous materials. They also are capable of higher throughput, making them ideal in facilities that have higher sterilization needs.
- Vertical Autoclaves: These top-loading units are best used for sterilizing glassware or other items that need to remain upright throughout the process. Because they occupy a smaller footprint than horizontally oriented models, they also make a good choice for facilities that don’t have a lot of floor space available.
- Pass-Through Autoclaves: These double-door units are designed with a door on each side of the chamber, allowing items to be loaded on one side (the “dirty” side) and unloaded on the other (the “clean” side). They are commonly found in vivariums and biosafety environments where maintaining a strict separation between contaminated and sterile areas is critical. Pass-through autoclaves are typically integrated into a modular wall system to maintain the integrity of the controlled environment.
- Countertop / Benchtop Autoclaves: These smaller “set-in-place” units are designed to sit on a lab counter. They are ideal for processing small instruments and loads in settings where space is at a premium or sterilization volume is low. They offer a similar core steam sterilization performance in a compact, accessible unit.
Not only are there different types, but autoclaves also differ by sterilization method, which is often available as an option on a specific model rather than a separate unit type. Vacuum-pump-equipped units actively remove air from the chamber before introducing steam, ensuring superior penetration into porous materials and wrapped packs. Gravity (or gravity-displacement) units rely on steam pushing air downward and out through a drain, making them a cost-effective solution for non-porous, unwrapped items such as glassware and liquid media.
