How Lab Sterilizers Work
Lab sterilizers use heat, steam, chemicals, or other sterilization processes to destroy microorganisms on laboratory instruments, glassware, and other compatible materials.
Steam sterilizers, commonly called autoclaves, expose loads to saturated steam under pressure. Depending on the equipment and cycle, operating temperatures commonly fall around 121°C to 135°C (250°F to 275°F). Gravity-displacement units introduce steam that pushes cooler air downward and out of the chamber. Pre-vacuum models actively remove air before steam enters, helping steam penetrate wrapped instruments, porous materials, and more complex loads.
Other applications may require dry heat, low-temperature hydrogen peroxide vapor or plasma systems, or gas sterilization. The appropriate method depends on the materials being processed, required cycle performance, temperature sensitivity, and facility requirements.

Types of Lab Sterilizers
Laboratory sterilizers can be categorized by both their sterilization method and their physical configuration. Understanding these differences helps facility teams find equipment that matches available space and daily processing requirements.
Steam Autoclaves (Benchtop & Floor)
Benchtop autoclaves provide steam sterilization in a compact format. They are well suited for laboratories with limited space, lower processing volumes, or smaller instruments and supplies. These laboratory autoclaves can be a practical choice for educational labs, research spaces, and other facilities that do not require the capacity of a large floor-standing unit.

Gravity vs. Pre-Vacuum Sterilizers
Gravity sterilizers offer a straightforward, cost-effective approach for many nonporous and unwrapped items. They are commonly appropriate for glassware, liquids, and other loads that allow steam to circulate easily.
Pre-vacuum sterilizers use a vacuum system to remove air before steam exposure. This improves penetration into porous materials, wrapped packs, and instruments where trapped air could interfere with sterilization.
Dry-Heat Sterilizers
Dry-heat sterilizers use heated air rather than steam. This approach can be useful for compatible glassware, metal instruments, powders, oils, and materials that may be damaged by moisture.
Dry heat generally requires higher temperatures and longer exposure times than steam sterilization. Facilities should evaluate both material compatibility and required turnaround time before selecting this method.
Low-Temperature Plasma and Vapor Systems
Low-temperature sterilization can protect instruments and materials that cannot tolerate the heat or moisture associated with steam. Many systems use hydrogen peroxide vapor, sometimes combined with plasma technology, to achieve sterilization at lower operating temperatures.
Gas Sterilization (Ethylene Oxide)
Ethylene oxide, or EtO, sterilization is another option for heat- and moisture-sensitive materials, including certain complex instruments that may be difficult to process using other sterilization processes.
EtO requires careful facility planning because of ventilation, environmental, worker-safety, monitoring, and post-cycle aeration requirements. Facilities considering gas sterilization should address applicable regulatory requirements early in the design process.
How to Choose the Right Sterilizer
Before specifying equipment, facility planners and lab managers should create a basic sterilizer checklist:
- Identify the materials and load types that will be sterilized.
- Estimate the number and size of loads processed each day.
- Determine whether steam, dry heat, low-temperature, or gas sterilization is appropriate.
- Confirm required chamber capacity and loading configuration.
- Review available electrical, plumbing, drainage, ventilation, and steam utilities.
- Identify validation and cycle-documentation requirements.
- Compare equipment cost with long-term utility and maintenance needs.
