How Laminar Flow Hoods Work

A flow hood effectively creates a curtain of filtered air that flows in front of a work surface. This serves to block any airborne contaminates from entering or leaving the work area. Technicians can put their hands through the air curtain and work on the table with near-total freedom, unlike fully enclosed and sealed workstations that require the use of attached gloves. Some of the most common use cases for these benches include cell culture studies, pharmaceutical compounding and microelectronics assembly.

Types of Laminar Flow Hoods

Vertical Laminar Flow Hoods — Vertical flow hoods generate a curtain of air that flows downward in front of the work surface. These tend to be narrower, which makes them a good choice in areas with space constrictions. However, because the air blows directly onto the technician they can cause discomfort.

Portable Laminar Flow Hoods — These hoods are designed to be set up virtually anywhere, providing an instant clean workspace for technicians. They are often used in laboratories where activities requiring flow hoods are limited or intermittent, or where there is not enough space for a permanent clean bench to be installed.

Explosion-Proof Laminar Flow Hoods — Featuring enhanced safety features such as non-sparking motors and cast-iron housings, these are used when working with combustible materials to prevent hazardous situations.
